Things every winter mini-breaker should add to their itinerary

Despite its plummeting temperatures and adverse weather conditions, winter is certainly a season that should be celebrated.

Outdoors, landscapes are transformed come wintertime – while indoors, the warm, cosy feeling that’s synonymous with the festive season can be enjoyed by all.

Here at Clearwell Castle, we’re opening our doors to host a series of restaurant events and winter escapes.

As well as being a magnificent backdrop to countless weddings over the years, our beautiful castle and grounds is the perfect base for your winter mini-break or even a honeymoon in the snow.

Guests staying with us will find plenty to do at our multi-award-winning venue and in the local area, so without further ado, here’s what you should be doing during your stay at Clearwell Castle.

Clearwell Caves

Based just around the corner from Clearwell Castle is an amazing attraction that’ll take you to new depths.

Discover a hidden world right beneath your feet at Clearwell Caves, a stunning, natural cave system that’s been mined for some 4,500 years.

In addition to viewing the magical world of this expansive cavern, you’ll find out more about the fascinating history of ancient iron and ochre mining.

Above ground, there’s more to explore, not to mention a delicious bite to eat to enjoy at their on-site Lamproom café.

The Royal Forest of Dean

We couldn’t not include the iconic and utterly stunning Forest of Dean in our top things to do rundown.

The area may be popular with walkers and adventurers during the spring and summer months, but winter offers an altogether different and equally beautiful view of the famous forest. Here the Forest of Dean Tourist Information and Travel Guide explains more:

“Visit in the winter and discover new horizons and viewpoints in a forest without leaves, your eyes can travel up to trace the majestic deciduous forms against the cold sky.

The trees that were a background riot of colour in the autumn suddenly come into their own. Without its canopy, the forest even in the depths of winter is light and welcoming.”

These ancient woodlands are a must-see during your stay with us, with forest, riverside and wildlife walks a plenty to fill your days.

A visit to Puzzlewood, situated within the Forest of Dean, is also highly recommended. This inspiring, magical outdoor attraction has been used to film Merlin, Dr Who, and other popular TV shows and blockbusters. It’s also home to a farm, indoor and outdoor maze, café, and gift shop.

Dean Forest Railway

Experience the beauty of the area in a unique and memorable way with a train ride at Dean Forest Railway.

The railway hosts a range of great experiences, including Evening Steam Train Fish and Chip Suppers, Brake Van Specials, Heritage Diesel Railcar Train Rides, and even Murder Mystery events.

Spanning some 4.5 miles, your authentic steam train ride will take you through the country’s most beautiful woodland and countryside.

There’s also five stations on the line, meaning you can spend the day hopping on and off to explore the local area and all its fantastic attractions.

There’s a museum based at the Norchard station too. Here you can find out more about the history of the Forest of Dean and Severn and Wye Railway.

Lydney Park Estate

Based just 14 minutes’ drive away from Clearwell Castle, Lydney Park Estate is another great day out.

Explore Lydney’s house and gardens, as well as its ancient Roman ruins (which consists of a Norman castle, Roman camp and Roman temple), deer park, woodland, and museum. The estate also hosts a variety of events – including shooting and stalking.

Eastgate Shopping Centre

Shop ‘til you drop on your stay with us by visiting Eastgate Shopping Centre. You’ll find a long list of retailers and food outlets to indulge in a little retail therapy or last minute Christmas shopping. You’ll also find shopping hotspots King’s Walk and Gloucester Quays nearby, so they’ll be plenty to keep you busy.
